Building a list is not something that happens accidentally or in an unplanned fashion. By having a list building strategy, and breaking it down into components and setting them up to run on auto-pilot, you can slowly and steadily build it up into the biggest asset of your infopreneur empire.

Here are 7 ways you can grow your list and make more sales.

Give Away Special Reports

Create a short document with high quality content of interest to your niche. Sprinkle it with links pointing back to your website. And on the pages of your website, place opt-in forms where visitors can sign up to join your list.

Then give away the report to everyone. List it on all free ebook directories you can find. Offer redistribution rights to others in your niche, so they can spread it around. You might even put a price tag on it to heighten the perceived value. Your list is often said to be your golden goose which will lay many eggs. However many people abuse their list, they flog the list to death. The first email they send to people who sign up for their e-course is a sales pitch.

Man you’ve got it all wrong!

I also say to people who are building lists – think of your list like a man or women you want to befriend and make love to!

You don’t go up to them and say let’s have sex (although a fellow did say that to my wife the other night!) – you know the answer you’ll get (and the answer she gave him I hope!!)

However if build a relationship with the person first, assuming they are single, and get to know them, once trust is built up love making will happen.

So where’s the analogy going?

If you hit your list with sales pitches from Day 1 what’s going to happen? They’ll think you are a sleaze! So what do you do?

You build trust, you build a relationship and then you seduce them!

Ok here’s an example. A person signs up for an e-course about web marketing. I send them about 4 emails telling them how it can be done and the ways it should be done. Then on the 5th email I might suggest a resource that I have used which is really useful and handy. Note I don’t "sell" it to them, I simply suggest it’s a good resource they might like to check out – of course the link to the product is my affiliate link so I will get a commission if and when they buy.

Give your subscribers quality information – this is so important, as this builds trust. Then when you need to do a promotion for a new product that is being launched, those on your list will trust you and more than likely buy from you.

When launching new products, the difficulty has always been to build momentum. Without momentum, it is very hard to launch a product successfully. The product may be an e-book, a physical product, a new website, or even a new service; it doesn’t really matter. If you don’t have enough momentum, the product launch will die down with a sizzle. Here are two suggestions on how you can build momentum to increase the chances of having a successful product launch.

The gist of using  article marketing   is to have your articles published in as many article directories as possible. Are you all excited and ready to start an affiliate internet business yet at the same time a little apprehensive and unsure of the start-up process? This article contains some basic guidelines and tips to help beginners get off to a smooth start.

If you have actually decided on the affiliate internet business that you would like to join the first step is to sign-up as an affiliate. The information requested from you on the affiliate business program sign-up forms differ from program to program. You may have already noticed that some programs request an awful lot of information whilst others request minimal information.

The affiliate internet business sign-up form will request you to give your name and email address. You will also be asked to choose a username and password. The username is a name that you would like to be known as while being an affiliate of the program and it may also be used by you to login to your affiliate panel and sometimes used in your affiliate url. So choose a name that is easy to type and remember and usually it must be a minimum of 5 characters long.

When it comes to entering your password, do not get confused and insert the password that you use to access your email account of the email address you have just provided. Choose a totally new password and type it all in small letters.

It is really important that you enter your email address correctly because more often than not the first thing that will happen is they will send an email to you requesting you to confirm that your email address is correct and that you did in fact request to be signed-up and agree to receive information from them.

Sometimes on the sign-up form you may be asked to confirm your email address. This simply means that you must type the same email address again in the box provided.

You may also have seen a note on the affiliate internet business program page asking you to white list their email address. This is to ensure that you do in fact receive the email they are going to send you. So you need to add their email address to your address book so that it will not be blocked by spam filters or end up in your spam folder.

The first email you receive from the affiliate program may request you to click on a confirmation link. Once you click on the confirmation link then you should receive an introductory email containing your affiliate information, such as username, password, link to access the affiliate program, your affiliate url etc., etc.

Click on the link to access the affiliate section of your affiliate internet business, once it is open in your browser Bookmark it in your Favorites so that you have easy access to it in the future. So as to keep your Favorites well organized, you could prior to doing this create a folder in your Favorites called Affiliate Programs and then bookmark your first program in that folder.

If you are not sure how to create a new folder, click on Favorites on your horizontal menu above your browser window, click on Organize Favorites, click on New Folder and type in the name of your new folder, press Enter and then click on Close. Now open your Favorites sidebar (in Windows XP a star icon on the left of your screen or press Alt+C) and you will see your new folder.

The first time you access your affiliate back office it is a good idea to go to your Profile or Personal Information page just to check that the information you inserted on the sign-up page is correct and you will probably be requested to enter further information.

It is really important to ensure that you provide the correct information they require in order to pay you. If they are paying by cheque be sure that your postal address is 100% correct. If they are using a payment processor such as for example PayPay or AlertPay you will notice that they request an email address. This is how these two payment processors work, your email address is your account number. So you would then have to open an account at PayPay or AlertPay (or whatever processor they are using) and then return to this page and enter the email address that you used to open the account.

Other payment processors do give you an actual account number, but you will normally be prompted on your profile page to enter an email address or account number so it is not easy to make a mistake.

As you will receive regular emails from the affiliate internet business programs that you join, it is a good idea to open a folder in your email account with the name of the affiliate program and file them away which helps keep you organized so that you can easily locate them. Be sure to save the email you receive with your sign up information.

Once the sign-up process is over you are now officially an affiliate and you have your own affiliate internet business. Congratulations! It is now time to get to work!

Spend time exploring your back office, go through all the links so that you get a good understanding of the program and go through the training program that they provide. Study the marketing materials such as the web page for you to market, internet marketing methods they recommend, banners, text links, splash pages, examples of solo adverts, email ads and classified ads etc.

Many of the affiliate internet business programs will provide you with the name and contact details of your sponsor so don’t be afraid to contact them if you need assistance. Also you may well find that the affiliate program has a forum, if so, I highly recommend you spend time there as they are not only usually a gold mine of information but where you can ask questions and seek advice from other affiliate internet business owners.

And, because they think of themselves as small, owners feel that they can’t effectively compete in a crowded market or in a market where they face competitors that greatly outsize them. That’s a huge mistake. Many large corporations, and some of the most profitable companies ever created (Yahoo, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, eBay), have had very modest beginnings. So for entrepreneurs to limit their expectations and future business potential based on their present circumstance or position isn’t very smart.

Don’t be afraid of entering a large marketplace simply because it’s large. Large is a good thing. It means that there exists greater opportunities and potential for more players. And while the number and size of competitors will certainly be greater, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. More competition means somebody’s making money, otherwise no one would bother, so you immediately know that there’s more profit potential. And the involvement of bigger companies often makes the stakes higher for them.

Large competitors have more, and often better, resources that are brought into the marketplace, however they’re not always as "agile" as a smaller competitor. They’re oftentimes unable to respond as quickly to customer interest or market changes. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at what has happened in recent years within the automobile industry. The "giants" were too slow to change and adapt themselves to supply what the market demanded. As a result, they have suffered huge losses and endangered or lost their premier rank in the industry’s hierarchy. In comparison with large organizations, small companies have their own advantages; less bureaucracy, a faster decision-making track, and ultimately less investment risk. If something doesn’t work, it’s much easier for a small competitor to make the adjustment or move on to something that does work.

Market Niche vs. Niche Market

Rather than trying to find a niche market, it may be more beneficial to use your resources to find your market niche. Don’t concentrate on the market size, concentrate on your place in the market. Rather than focusing on a narrow market subset that requires highly specialized or customized products and services, consider larger market segments that offer more variety, flexibility and profit potential. Find a market that you’re especially interested in or knowledgeable about. When you do, chances are you’re not alone. You’ll likely find that there are many others in the marketplace that have similar interests to yours and are searching for products or services related to that interest.

Remember, even large companies can’t service every customer. Find out where your business can fit in to a larger commercial arena where more opportunity for growth and profits exists. Then find ways to distinguish your business from your competitors. Can your business offer faster service or a better quality product? Can you offer a customer service department where each time the customer calls they’re able to talk to the same one or two people rather than being passed around to a different person every time they make contact? Can you provide "perks" that give added value to your products and services that provide your clients with exceptional customer experiences? These are ways in which you can compete against larger and more numerous competitors.

Competing against the multitudes or the giants can have its place. Against such competition, you grow smarter, stronger, better or you don’t survive.

My grandfather used to say "I’d rather be a big fish in a little pond, than a small fish in a big pond". The lesson of course being that he’d much rather be the fish doing the eating, rather than the one being eaten. And, while I understand his viewpoint, I hold a slightly different perspective. I tend to lean more toward the example of the small bait fish who swim with whale sharks many times their size, and thus have whole oceans at their disposal.

If your niche marketing business concentrates on  affiliate products , you need to be sure you have an auto responder with follow up messages regarding the product at hand and a landing page to send your prospects to so that you can capture their email addresses and get back to them in the future. The list is where the money is, so be sure to get those names and emails.

That may not be the ultimate conversion your business is measuring, but if people do not at least open your email, then they can’t take advantage of the offer contained within it. One of the biggest influencers of the ‘open rate’ is the ‘from name’. Studies consistently show that people are far more likely (by leaps and bounds!) to open an email from a person or company they recognize. People generally enjoy interacting with brands and organizations that they like, and when one of those organizations reaches out to them, they are eager and welcome the chance to open the email. Whereas, if someone receives an email from a person they don’t know, then the desire to rush and open this email from a stranger is far less prevalent.

Most email marketing software solutions will let you specify the ‘from name’ that is sent out with your email marketing campaign, just like you can customize the subject of the email, which is equally as important (but we’ll save that for another day). When you begin typing in the ‘from name’ that you want to use, stop and ask yourself: "Will my readers recognize this name?" For example, a lot of people subscribe to Joe’s Sports Pub mailing list. At the restaurant, there was a big sign saying that if you join their email marketing list, you’ll get special discounts. People were eager to signup. But, when Joe, the owner of the bar, created his email marketing campaign, he put the ‘from name’ as "Joe Smith". In all fairness, that was his actual name, but it was a calculated email marketing error. Joe’s recipients do not know the name "Joe Smith", they know the name "Joe’s Sports Pub". The exact same recipient who would see "Joe’s Sports Pub" and rush to open the email in order to find the coupon could easily bypass the email from this random stranger named "Joe Smith". This example clearly illustrates how entering the proper ‘from name’ in your email marketing software can result in an increased amount of opens.

It’s also worth noting that the ‘from name’ you enter into your email marketing software should work well with the subject you are using for your email marketing campaign. When your email lands in your recipient’s inbox, they can usually see both your ‘from name’ and the ’subject’. This makes both of these items very important real estate for you. The ultimate waste is when those two pieces of information repeat each other. Using our example before, if Joe reads this article, then goes back into his email marketing software and changes his ‘from name’ to "Joe’s Sports Pub", he’ll be taking a big step in the right direction. But, if his subject is "Coupons From Joe’s Sports Pub", then he has made yet another dreadful email marketing mistake. Three out of the five words in his subject are being used to repeat his ‘from name’. While the ‘from name’ is an incredibly important part of your email marketing campaign, it should not be repeated in the subject. Your recipient is already going to be able to see the from name in your email, so the subject should be used to describe the actual contents of the message (not to, once again, drive home the point of who actually sent the email). A better subject line for Joe would be "Appetizer Coupons," for example.

Most email marketing software solutions let you measure your open rate. If you monitor this closely, you will be able to very clearly see which ‘from name’ your recipient’s recognize most, as you will have an increased open rate. Even though the ‘from name’ is probably just one piece of data you enter into your email marketing software, it’s important to recognize that in many ways, it is the gateway that determines if everything else in your email gets read.
